hi all,

after a long discussion here, i was convinced that no matter 2d or 3d animator i want to be i must learn to draw and animate traditionally,

so i have my scanner and animation disc and software for pencil tests.
i have rolled up my sleeves but wait......

i am from computers background so i am quite well with all 3d softwares:
maya, max and also scripting like technical things.
but i dont have idea about exactly how 2d animators animate?

how they approach drawings on animation discs?
how they do numberings on them?
how to use an X sheet?
i have animators survival kit, timing for animation and animation from script to screen, so thats good.

but i really want guidance about how to do hands on an animation piece.
i would be greatfull if anyone can give step by step method.

and ya one more thing, i have found lot of exercise that should be done to make a good animation reel but i want list of exercises about how to begin in animation.

so thanks in advance any reply from traditional animators will be helpful.

and about my drawing skills : i am practising "natural way to draw".

Thank you very much again... !

Classical animation is not so different from the 3d animation!
we use same principles,same process!!
1st you have to fix your scene(timing)
Average frame rate is 24 but you can increase it if you want more smoothness.
then draw the key poses!!or we can say extreme poses!!!
Then draw break downs & in between!!!
The same process but you have to draw every frame!!!
If you have any other questions about it.please let me know!!!

< EDIT -- Wow! I just realised I replied to an age-old thread recently resurrected by someone. >

2d animation or 3d - its the same thing, except that you dont have a model ready. Its your job to keep it "on-model".

You should start with a bouncing ball exercise. Then do some more of them with different weights. Do a lot of these - they will be very challenging.
Then do an exercise for follow through, say - a grass blade. Similarly invent some exercises to explore animation principles. Dont bother with full character unless you are very sure that you can handle the principles in 2d. Be free in your drawing. It need not be clean, rough is okay.

About approaching 2d - it should be approached like you would in 3d ( which actually should be approached like in 2d ) - Key poses, breakdowns, Inbetweens. Its good that you are doing this, since doing 2d is going to test how you think of 3d animation. There will be a lot of drawings that will be needed to be re-drawn, replaced but dont let it discourage you. Its a part of the process. I would suggest you to read "Character Animation Crash Course - Eric Goldberg". Fantastic book for understanding character animation - 2d especially.
